The song stacks the unstoppable onslaught of bad news around a surprising message of sly hope. From there they hit Kanye, Trump, and the death of Lil Peep. In just the first verse, they touch on the opioid crisis, systemic racism, and fake news. Take the album’s early single, “Love It if We Made It,” for example: a track that manages to channel the feeling of constant dread that’s hitting us from all angles in 2018. As the album title suggests, the record analyzes the anxieties, the struggles, and the communication of a world that’s entirely too logged on. In terms of macro concept, no album has more succinctly captured the spirit of 2018 than The 1975’s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships. While the likes of Drake and Migos have run out of steam fast on their own lengthy albums, Astroworld makes it to the finish line through the velvety soul of “Coffee Bean.” As massive records with 15-plus songs have become the norm to game streaming numbers, Scott’s 17-song album manages to bring the heat in nearly every song. This is a vast, collaborative album, ine that never seems to run out of ideas. With Astroworld, Travis Scott released the Kanye West album that 2018 never got. The second act of the song tracks his rise to stardom to its peak, which in his mind is a relationship with Jenner, who’s both his saving grace and one of the biggest celebrities in the world. In this woozy trap ballad, he sings, “I was always high up on the lean / Then this girl came here to save my life.” It’s a reference to Kylie Jenner, with whom he recently had a kid and who inspired him to quit codeine.
